Nobody tells you what this day is like, so here it is. You will not be tested. Your child will not be tested in the way you are imagining.
What happens, step by step
Before the day
We ask for the diagnosis, the prescription and the insurance card. If something is missing, intake helps you chase it — that is our job, not yours.
The conversation
Forty minutes or so with you, without your child in the room if that is easier. Your worries, your routines, what a bad afternoon looks like. You are the source here, not a subject.
The observation
The BCBA plays with your child and records what happens. Standardized tools are used, but nobody is scoring your child against other children for a ranking.
The plan
Written afterwards, not in the room. Goals, hours, settings and how each goal will be measured — then submitted to your plan for authorization.
You read it before anyone signs
If a goal does not matter to your family, it comes out. A plan you did not agree with is not a plan, it is paperwork.
Things families ask us that day.
- How long does it take?Usually two to three hours across one or two visits, depending on your child's tolerance. We stop when your child is done, not when the form is done.
- Do I stay in the room?Yes, if you want to. Some children do better without a parent in view — the BCBA will tell you honestly which they are seeing.
- What if my child has a hard time?That is information, not a failure. A difficult moment during the assessment often tells the BCBA more than an easy hour would.
- What does it cost?If you are covered, the assessment is billed to your plan like any other authorized service. We tell you what your plan says before we schedule it.
